Electronic structure of the atom, and its relationship to the chemical bonding in solids. Atom packing and crystal structures. Relationship of structure, including defects, to mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of polymers in relation to structure. Composite materials. Surface defects: corrosion, friction, adhesion.
