GEO 306 Lab 10
Hand Samples and Ternary Phase Diagrams

To download an electronic copy of this lab (Adobe PDF File), Click Here. This lab exercise is designed to have the students explore Petrologic Hand Sample identification in a manner similar to that of the previous exercise, only this time the hand samples are true unknowns, as the students have not seen them before. The second part of this exercise again focuses on Phase Diagrams, but this time there is one Binary and one Ternary Diagram. The students are to use the knowledge they obtained about using phase diagrams from last week's exercise, and apply it to this new exercise. They are also to develop a sense of how the ternary diagram springs from the binaries. In all, this should give the student's a good taste of how these diagrams can be incredibly useful tools in the study of Petrology.

The handout on Rock Classification from two weeks back will come in handy this week as well. To download an electronic copy of this handout (Adobe PDF File), Click Here.
