GEO 306 Lab 9
Hand Samples and Binary Phase Diagrams

To download an electronic copy of this lab (Adobe PDF File), Click Here. This lab exercise is designed to give you a little more in depth look at the same rocks that you studied in Lab the previous week. There are questions about the minerals present, as well as other textural features of the rocks. Using the answers to all of these questions, plus what you have learned about Petrology in class, you can give these rocks an even more detailed classification than was possible in the previous exercise.

Also, this lab serves as the students' introduction to Binary Phase Diagrams. The questions associated with these diagrams are designed to give a full understanding of how phase diagrams work, why they work, and why they are such a powerful tool. You will learn how to manipulate these diagrams, and in so doing you will be preparing yourself for the next step; Ternary Phase Diagrams.

The handout on Rock Classification from last week's exercise may prove useful for this exercise as well. To download an electronic copy of this handout (Adobe PDF File), Click Here.
