GEO 306 Lab 8
Introduction to Petrology
To download an electronic copy of this lab (Adobe PDF File), Click Here. This lab exercise is shorter than most of the other labs you have done this semester for several reasons. First and foremost, you'll begin working on it immediately after your Lab Midterm Exam. The second major reason is that this lab marks your departure from the Mineralogy labs, and is the first of the labs dealing with the field of Petrology. In this lab exercise, you will be given ten hand samples of different types of rocks, and you are to identify what minerals you see present in the hands sample, and then identify the rock based on its mineralogy. This will be a short exercise, but should begin to give you a bit of background knowledge on petrologic rock classification.
There is also a handout associated with this lab on simple rock identification. To download an electronic copy of this handout (Adobe PDF File), Click Here.
