To download an electronic copy of this lab (Adobe PDF File), Click Here. Up until this point, the laboratory exercises in this course have focused on mineral identification and structural models. Now, we have reached the point in the semester where the students have seen all of the new minerals that they are going to see, as well as all of the structural models. Now, the lab exercises will take on a new form. In preparation for the mineralogy lab exam, the first portion of the next two labs will involve mineral trays containing 35 hand samples of minerals that you have already seen in previous lab exercises as a means of studying for the mineralogy lab exam.
The second portion of this lab will focus on an introduction to symmetry and crystallography. In this exercise, the students will become familiar with some basic symmetry operations, and how they apply to unit cells, crystal lattices, and macroscopic crystallography. These can be difficult concepts to grasp at first, so if you have questions, do not hesitate to ask, as many of the next important concept build upon these as a foundation, so it is important for you to have a full understanding of these cornerstone concepts.
