- Campus Bus:
- Campus Bus offers free weekend service to the Smithhaven Mall and the Edwards shopping center.

- Smithhaven Mall hosts a variety of department stores and specialty shops (shoes, eyeglasses, galleries, etc.).

- Edwards is a local supermarket which opens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can get your groceries there.
- The S-60 Bus (the Blue Bus):
- This local bus charges $1.50 per ride, but it can take you to many off campus places. It runs along the Coram/Port Jefferson Station to Smithhaven Mall route. On the SB campus, it stops at Tabler/Kelly, the (old) union, the administration building, and the hospital. The bus service is hourly and it operates everyday except Sunday and major holidays.

- You can, if you want to, take the local (the blue bus) bus to the s tore. Get off at the Stony Brook Coventry Mall stop, cross the street, and find the store behind the Hess gas station. It is, however, much better if you can find someone to take you there, especially on your first trip.
- There are two Chinatowns in the New York City: Chinatown in downtown Manhattan and Flushing in Queens. Many Chinese students go there for weekly or monthly shopping. Make friends with those who do and soon you'll be able to enjoy authentic Chinese grocery too!
- How to get to the city through the LIRR (Long Island Railroad):
- The Stony Brook train station is near the North Parking Lot, behind the gym.

- The destination is Penn Station (34 St. and 7th Ave.) in New York City. The train operates roughly every hour. Normally one will need to change at the Huntington Station. Just wait on the platform for the other train to pull in behind the train you just get off.
- The fare for an off-peak round trip is about 14 dollars. Tickets sales at the SB station are performed by ticket machines. You can also purchase your tickets on the train, but you'll have to pay a 3 dollar fine. During peak hours (4-8 am to the city and 4-8 pm from the city Mon. through Fri.) the fare is 20 dollars round-trip (or 10 dollars each way).

- The main library: free video rentals. Use Stars, the Stony Brook electronic catalog for title and call number information.
- The Emma Clark Library: a local public library. You can get a card by submitting proof of your residence in the area (rent lease, phone bills, etc.) The rental is free.
