Stony Brook University Capoeira
*** Fall 2008 Practices Have Begun ***
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art created by enslaved Africans in the 16th century...Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Technique and strategy are the key elements to playing a good game.1
The Stony Brook University Capoeira Club was created and supported by students and for students in order to promote the development of the Brazilian art of Capoeira on campus. It provides a place for all capoeiristas and those wishing to learn this unique blend of martial arts, acrobatics and dance, to come train, participate and share their knowledge of capoeira. The SBU Capoeira Club exists to allow students to take advantage of the free student activities and is an effort to provide for students an instrument of defense, expression and freedom. The practices are highly structured and are led by a highly experienced and dedicated capoeirista. Advanced students also assist those that are new to the martial art.
Anyone can participate in the SBU Capoeira Club. Beginners are especially welcome and they are often surprised by what they are capable of. Basic techniques are easy to learn and there is significantly less contact involved in comparison to other martial arts. Seasoned martial artists will also benefit from practicing capoeira. The practices are generally a lot of fun, particularly the roda. Capoeira is a great workout and can help improve strength, coordination, flexibility, and especially stamina.
Meeting times for Fall 2008 are officially every Thursday from 7:00PM to 9:00PM in the Union Bi-Level (Lower Level, go down the stairs) in the Student Union and Fridays from 7:00PM to 8:30PM in the Sports Complex Dance Studio (follow the signs).
