New Projects for New Times: Student-Centered Learning Pathways

New Projects for New Times is dedicated to providing resources for student-centered, problem-based learning and teaching. The resources presented are designed to facilitate and provide examples of integrated, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary curricular arrangements. The featured project experiences present curriculum not from a narrow band of subject matter, but from a more realistic and broader "real world" perspective. The problems and problem-solving pathways within the projects become instructional pathways and vehicles for a more student-centered educational approach. The topics and themes within the projects motivate students to become more self-directed and less-passive learners. New roles require students to assume more responsibility in managing and self-organizing their own learning. These learning and teaching experiences are designed to be open-ended and appeal to many ability and motivational levels. Often there are many "right" answers and no limits to the depth students can explore a topic or theme. Each project can offer many related "spin-off" or sub topics to tailor the curriculum to the interests of many students within the same class. Group work or cooperative learning opportunities natural evolve as the topics are rich in diversity but also connections. Here are some helpful links to more information on Student or Learner-Centered Problem-Based Curriculum.

The following sample projects are always considered work in progress. They can be modified and adapted to many classroom settings and curricular orientations.
