"Who we are by the sociological and political definition of society has little to do with who we are."

Society presumes who we are by their stereotyping the groups we belong to. Individuals are not often given the opportunity to express who they really are. Not everyone is able to find his or her own voice.

Labeling affects even those who have never experienced segregation.

W. E. B. Du Bois (the African American writer and civil rights activist) called it "double-consciousness": the feeling of "always looking at oneself through the eyes of others".
