General Reagents

           Unless stated otherwise, all reagents were obtained from Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems (Sparks, MD), Bio-Rad Laboratories (Hercules, CA), Boehringer Manheim Corporation (Indianapolis, IN), Fisher Scientific Company (Fair Lawn, NJ), Gibco BRL Life Technologies (Paisley, Scotland), J.T. Baker (Phillipsburg, NJ), Pharmco Products (Brookfield, CT), Pierce (Rockford, IL), or Sigma Chemical Company (St. Louis, MO). Liquid sterilization was achieved by autoclaving at 120ēC and 25psi for 30 minutes, or by microfiltration (0.2 mm, Pall Corporation, Ann Arbor, MI).
