Site  Assessment Project

I chose for my site assessment project the topic “Benefits of Walking”.  I would like to find out what the specific benefits are. I am hoping to also find more details as to how one should start a walking routine. And any advice as to how to keep up with the routine in general.

One of the two search engines that I chose to do this research is  altavista.com.  Each time I performed my search, there were different numbers of hits that was indicated. One time it was 407 hits, while this time it was 385 hits.  The three "good " and "poor" sites that I chose are summarized in the following table with the URL of the sites indicated.

Good Sites
Poor Sites
1. http://www.healthfront.com/walking/benefit.html
This site discusses the benefits of walking, pointing out the beneficial it has for people with osteoarthritis condition. It also discusses how much walking, how frequent and the heart rate. It talks about warm up and cool down.
1.http://www.saigon.com/~anson/ebud/ebmed056.htm
While this site talks about walking, it is about walking meditation, not exactly what I had in mind. One could argue that this is health related, but I was not referring to meditation and that is what this site concentrated on.
2. http://www.gsu.edu/~hprjad/kh_755/walking.html
This site was developed by the Department of Kinesiology and Health at George State University. It gives a short history, then go into techniques and components of walking workout. If you would like to know more about fitness and how to get started, visit their getting started page: http://www.gsu.edu/~hprjad/kh_755/getstart.html
2.http://www.dot.state.nc.us/services/GHSP/walkrel.htm
This site is actually useful for parents of Durham, North Carolina in that it talks about the benefit of walking their children to school or bus stops to learn pedestrian safety. However, it does not identify what I had in mind.
3. http://www.smtmoves.com/HOL/walking4.html
This site is simple and yet is well organized in my view. It has a table of contents in case you want to view the other items associated with this page.
3.http://www.healthyideas.com/healing/oncall/980324.doc.html
I did not find this site particularly helpful. There are some tidbits that is helpful. But I get the feeling that it is more like a bulletin board which answers questions. I did not find a portion of the web site that addresses what I am looking for.

The second search engine that I used is infoseek.com. There were 144 hits in this search. The "good" and "poor" sites that I chose to assess are in the following table.

Good Sites
Poor Sites
1.  http://www.homearts.com/hl/articles/97walf1.htm
This site offers tips on how to maximize the benefits of walking, both physically and psychologically. It also has a table of contents that included items that would be of interest to the researcher.
1.http://bcn.boulder.co.us/boulder/pressrelease/1998/pr980918B.html
this site is very similar to the one in Durham, North Carolina. It discusses the benefit of walking the children to school to teach the children pedestrian safety.
2. http://www.heartinfo.org/reutersnews/t081413f.htm
This site has an article that explains why walking is beneficial to the heart. It also includes other related information about keeping the heart healthy.
2. http://www-tech.mit.edu/V118/N27/chuang.27o.html
this site has nothing to do at all about the benefits of walking.
3. http://www.walkinggolf.org/research.html
This site discusses the benefits of walking in golfing. Its research emphasizes that walking is definitely a part of golfing. Their main home page's URL is http://www.walkinggolf.org/index.shtml.
3.  http://www.golfweb.com/library/books/
This page consists of books about golfing. Towards the bottom of the page is where you see the link to "merits of walking".
