Media & Visual Interpretation Media has to be one of the most powerful tools, if not the most, in the world. When it was first introduced its spectrum of possibilities was limited. Now, with new and advanced technology we are able to shoot images and sound all over the globe and provide information to a wide scope of people. All aspects of media, from television to magazines, consume our society. It has a profound effect on shaping the minds and attitudes of the people. It can serve as an avenue for education and entertainment or propaganda and a way to control the minds of the masses of people. From taking the introduction to visual interpretations class I had the opportunity to work with different aspects of media. Through this experience I’ve learned that the meaning and content in any aspect of media can be very ambiguous. Its now possible to skew, crop, superimpose and merge images and sound to create whatever your heart desires. As the creator you control what people do and do not see. You pick and choose what and how you want your audience to view and feel about your piece of work. Its interpretation is solely controlled by the mind of the beholder. As bizarre as this may sound New Media can put President Bush in your bathtub and give Beyonce a baldhead, bear belly and mustache. In the arena of film, a slight change in the angle and perspective of a camera gives you a different view from what’s actually there. So I have come to the conclusion that EVERYTHING needs more than a glance. You must look closer and think harder about what’s presented in front of you. Next time you look at a cover girl model, think to yourself “maybe her skin isn’t so flawless” and I can almost guarantee you its not. Or the next time you see Britney Spears with a Colgate smile and perfectly white teeth, think, “Maybe that’s someone else’s mouth”. Celebrities are airbrushed, slimmed and elongated to portray perfection, which is virtually impossible. Politicians and elected officials speeches are edited. Even the news manipulates images and sound to create the desired outcome. Almost everyone takes advantage of the infinite possibilities media holds. So, now I’m at the end and contrary to how pessimistic I sound above I must say I loved indulging in the infinite possibilities of media. It was VERY interesting and fun, but you always have to remember that what you see is NOT what you get! !
*If this was Beyonce holding a Siberian Tiger on a Diamond leash by a porsche would you second guess this pictures authenticity?
