NAVIGATING THE WEB

Netscape is the browser (software that displays a page) you are using to navigate and it facilitates your movements through the Web. It allows you to enter specific addresses (known as URLs) if you know them. It also allows you to follow links from one page to another. Netscape provides you with visual clues to let you know when an item is a link to another page. Words are typically underlined and a different color. Images may have a colored border. In any case, the cursor changes shape when you move it over a link, becoming a pointing hand rather than an arrow.

To Go to a Particular Place:

Click on the OPEN button at the top midsection of the Netscape window or go to MenuBar->File->Open Location (in Navigator 4.0). Type in the full URL of the site in question. URLs begin with the telltale http:// (although it is not necessary to type this in) and then provide the information for locating the page in the network. These days many known companies and people can be found simply by typing in the name; for example just "apple" will get you to Apple's website www.apple.com

    Printing Information on a Page:

Click on the PRINT button at the top midsection of the Netscape window or go to MenuBar->File->Print. This will print out all of the information on the page (multiple physical pages if need be) to the currently chosen printer.

    Downloading Images from a Page:

Click on the image you would like to download and hold down the mouse button. This brings up a dialog box where you can choose SAVE THIS IMAGE AS.... This brings up an option to name the image you would like to download and choose where you want to save it (i.e. the Desktop, etc.).

To Go Back to a Visited Location:

Click on the BACK button at the top left of the Netscape window to go back to the last page you visited. Or go to MenuBar->Go->Oldpage Title Name to go to a recent page. Pages with frames can make this a little trickier. In this case it may be best to click on the frame in question and use the Back option.

    To Open A New Window:

As you're surfing, sometimes you might want to follow several different threads at once. This is easiest to do if each tangent has it's own window. To open a new window to surf in, go to MenuBar->File->New Navigator Window. Another possibility is to open a new window when following a link. To do this, hold down the mouse button and choose New Window With This Link.

    To Save Bookmarks:

While wandering through the Web, it is often helpful to keep track of interesting places to visit again. Netscape has a feature built into it to allow you to quit Netscape and still easily return to favorite places. This is the idea of a "bookmark" to a page. To add a bookmark, go to MenuBar->Bookmarks->Add Bookmark. It then appears at the bottom of the list under MenuBar->Bookmarks. To edit these bookmarks (they tend to pile up and become outdated as things change quickly), open the Bookmarks window under MenuBar->Window->Bookmarks. From this list you can rearrange and organize your bookmarks, or delete ones which no longer work.

The other alternative is to go to MenuBar->Window->Bookmarks and then MenuBar->Save As.. to make yourself a bookmark file you could carry around on a Zip disk. To use the bookmarks, simply open up the file in your browserMenuBar->File->Open File (or Page in Navigator in 4.0) as an HTML page full of links.
