Sigma Beta Constitution

Our Mission Statement:

"Dedicated to academic excellence while raising public awareness and inspiring individual initiative to make service within our communities an integral part of our lives."

WHO WE ARE
Sigma Beta is a Stony Brook honor society devoted to academic excellence and university service. Students who attain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher are invited to become provisional members of Sigma Beta. To attain full membership, provisional members are required to demonstrate a commitment to assisting the community, and in doing so, should aim to recognize and develop their civic role in society, while maintaining standards of academic performance. This service requirement is designed to help students discover the intangible rewards of community service and establish a life-long tradition of active participation in their community. In order to attain full membership, provisional members are required to follow a point system. Members inducted as freshmen are required to earn a total of 30 points, sophomores 24 points, and juniors 12 points. This obligation may be met through participation in Sigma Beta's activities and involvement in one or more organizations other than Sigma Beta, which contribute to the campus or the community at large. Through our involvement we not only make important contributions to the university and local community, but we also make our undergraduate careers at Stony Brook more meaningful and worthwhile.

PAST & UPCOMING EVENTS
During its twenty years, Sigma Beta has contributed to the University community in a variety of ways. We have sponsored a volunteer tutoring program, peer advising sessions, dormitory talks with faculty, food and clothing drives, and holiday visits to the University Hospital Pediatrics Ward. In addition, Sigma Beta members have volunteered for numerous annual beach clean-ups, the Walk for Beauty, the CROP walk, Habitat for Humanity, the Stony Brook Veteran's Home, The Special Olympics, and have participated in Pride Patrol Day, Relay for Life and Light the Night. Continuing our tradition of service, this semester the Executive Board of Sigma Beta has developed three programs, the Hospital Outreach Program, West Campus Affairs Program, and the Community Service Program, through which Sigma Beta members will be working closely with organizations on and around campus. These include the Eastern Farm Workers Association (EFWA), SPEC, the Port Jefferson Soup Kitchen, NYPIRG, SAMAR, the Little Angels Fund, the University Hospital Blood Bank, and Oxfam America.
