Stony Brook SEAC has more for you:

Bulletin Board Reclamation

Tired of staring at those credit card advertisements that adorn classroom bulletin boards?  Sick of watching your event announcements torn down to make room for corporate gloss?  Fed up with the relentless propagandizing and marketeering that has become a staple in the American University?

Stony Brook SEAC has initiated a "no compromise" campaign against the American advertising industry.  Over the past twenty years, the industry has slowly extended its tentacles into universities and colleges, overtaking campus bulletin boards, organizing "special events" and "student activities", financing information tables and career fairs, and "sponsoring" buildings and stadiums.  At Stony Brook, advertisements from such companies as Raytheon, Kodak, the Alaskan Fishing Industry, Visa, Mastercard, AT&T, Computer Associates, etc... pervade every public space, from lecture halls to department offices to building lobbies.  Such propaganda floods the university information system.  Small, poorly funded student groups can hardly compete against the multi-million dollar budgets of large multinationals.  For every B&W photocopy that student groups post, multi-nationals post hundreds of high-gloss, focus-group tested, agency-developed advertisements.  Businesses pay a flat fee to "poster-bots" who scramble from bulletin board to bulletin board removing local fliers to make room for corporate ads.

With glee, Stony Brook SEACers hack away at one arm of this mutli-limbed monster.  Once a week, anonymous SEACers and other Stony Brook students walk the route of the corporate poster-bots, undoing their work.  In place of the glossy advertisements, SEACers hang a simple proclamation:

"This board has been reclaimed by the students of Stony Brook"

Recycling

After 18+ years of unreflective consumption, Stony Brook SEACers are turning their gaze upon their excretion.  SEACers are revamping the University's recycling program.

Educating the Eaters: Vegetarianism

Vegetarians make themselves abundant in environmental organizations.  Stony Brook SEAC is no exception.  Many, but not all, of our members are vegetarian or vegan.  Fed up with (or under fed by) Aramark's vegetarian selection, members have taken positive steps toward increasing the availability of vegetable dishes on campus.  The vegetarian committee also works to publicize vegetarianism as a viable health option for even the pickiest eaters.

Operation Outreach

The Student Environmental Action Coalition would like to live up to the last part of its acronym.  Hence, Stony Brook SEACers are working to develop a strong, local coalition of environmental and progressive organizations in the island.  So far, the Outreach committee has contacted numerous groups and clubs in high schools, colleges, and churches in the Three Village area.  With a great deal of work yet to do, our long-term goals are the following:

  1. To build a strong network of environmental an progressive groups on Long Island.
  2. To disseminate information about Stony Brook SEAC and our Campaigns to others unfamiliar with Stony Brook.
  3. To act as an information clearinghouse for other groups on the Island.
  4. To establish new groups in uncharted territories, particularly in High Schools and local Colleges.
  5. To provide resources (such as speakers and information) to ailing organizations.

A Note About Our Campaigns:

If you do not see a campaign here that you think is worth pursuing, by all means, tell us.  Though a national organization, SEAC chapters are completely autonomous.  Thus, Stony Brook SEAC operates under an "If you build it, they will come" policy.  In other words, if you're interested in starting a campaign, please come to our meetings and propose your idea.  If your idea wins general approval (it is very easy to win general approval), you will be appointed automatic point-person for a new campaign committee.  Usually, one or two people will help with the initiation of new projects or campaigns.  And, it only takes a few people to make a real difference.  You can be one of those people!  We are always looking for motivated and creative students to help protect the environment.  If you have any thoughts on this matter, we urge you to write us or to attend our meetings.  New members are welcome at any time.
