Viva la Raza

Viva la Raza is an event hosted by the Beta Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha and the Alpha Delta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon, Senoritas Latinas Unidas. The purpose of this event is to promote pride in our Latin American culture while educating our community. This year we present our fifth annual Viva la Raza. This year's theme is Birth of Our Nations; the event will honor the 200 years of independence that many Latin American countries such as Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico are celebrating this year. With this theme, we hope to reflect the cultural diversity that has emerged in Latin America throughout its 200 years as an independent continent and that continues to evolve day by day.

Throughout the evening, our guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of entertaining acts, including live performances of traditional dances, singing, poetry, and many more compelling and inspiring acts by members of the Latino community. The night promises to deliver a level of enjoyment that will be unforgettable to all.

Over the past few years, Viva la Raza has earned recognition from Stony Brook University as the campus' most successful program of the year. Each year, the Viva La Raza committee donates a percentage of the profits to an organization. This year's chosen organization is the Barefoot Foundation (La Fundacion Pies Descalzos). This organization was created by pop artist Shakira in 1997 with the hope of helping impoverished children in Colombia. The foundation's main focus is on aid through education, and the organization has five schools across Colombia that provides education and meals for 4000 children.
