Mouse-men and Lion-men
by Bhikkhu Khantipalo

Little man a-running
To catch the speeding bus
Little man walking
With sense straying far
Little man worried
About affairs of no account
Little man going
With crowding thoughts of yesterday
Little man coming
With hopes and fears and future plans
But is it not strange
Little man not thinking
Never once considering
Why am I running?
Why am I walking?
Why am I worried?
Why am I going?
Why am I coming?
Where did I come from?
Where shall I go to?
Why am I living?
And he who can answer
With certainty these questions
With purified heart
And mind crystal clear
No longer is he--
A little man.
