News
1) We will be meeting at the Chapin Community Center (CCC) this Thursday. The CCC is located in the Chapin Apartment Complex, which is across the street from the University Hospital. Once you get into the Apartment Complex, walk along the sidewalk on the right hand side of the road (going in) and the meeting room (A1002) is
next to the first staircase of the first building. It has a half-glass door. There is a blue newspaper box and a black telephone outside.
2) If you live around New York City (Long Island included), you can now watch Ven. Sheng-yen's Dharma talk on Channel 25 (a NYC public TV station, UHF). Show time is on Saturday at midnight. The talk is given in Chinese with English subtitle (if "crouching tiger, hidden dragon" can be popular, there is no reason why the Dharma talks can't :-)). People (mostly Westerners) have been calling the Chan Meditation Center to express their thanks for the program. Check it out!
3) Ven. Thich Nhat-Hanh will be coming to Long Island. He will give a lecture at Southampton College on 5/19. We'll keep you posted when we get further information.
4) We have updated "Once Upon a Time," our collection of Buddhist stories. Enjoy!

Words from the Suttas/Sutras
"Were all living beings to be free from sickness, I also would not be sick. Why? Manjusri, for the bodhisattva, the world consists only of living beings, and sickness is inherent in living in the world. Were all living beings free of sickness, the bodhisattva also would be free of sickness.... Manjusri, the bodhisattva loves all living beings as if each were his only child. He becomes sick when they are sick and is cured when they are cured. You ask me, Manjusri, whence comes my sickness; the sicknesses of the bodhisattvas arise from great compassion." --Vimalakirti Sutra

Quote of the Week
"A jewel of great price is never a giveaway. We must earn it, with steady, unrelenting practice.  We must earn it in each moment, not just in the 'spiritual side' of our life.  How we keep our obligations to others, how we serve others, whether we make the effort of attention that is called for each moment of our life--all of this is paying the price for the jewel.  I'm not talking about erecting a new set of ideals of 'how I should be.'  I'm talking about earning the integrity and wholeness of our lives by every act we do, every word we say."--Charlotte Joko Beck
