Ch4_1

New Problems reloads the page with new variable values in all questions. You must do this after grading the test to rework it another time.
Make sure to calculate your answers in SI units unless specified otherwise .
1) A N force directed north and a N force directed east act on an object of grams. What is the acceleration of the object (sheet 5) ?
2) A N force directed west and a N force directed south act on a kg object. What is the direction of the object's acceleration (sheet 5) ? Give the direction as an angle in degrees and measured from the west direction going counter clockwise.
3) A kg block is held at rest on a plane which is inclined by degrees with respect to the horizontal. The force holding the object on the plane is directed parallel to the inclined plane. What is the magnitude of this force (sheet 11,13, neglect friction) ? Indicate with a negative (positive) sign whether the "normal force" on the box is not needed (must be known) in order to do this problem.
4) A person's mass is kg. What is the person's apparent weight when riding in an elevator which moves with constant velocity (sheet 16) ? Indicate with a positive (negative) sign whether the result is the same (is not the same) as for the elevator at rest.
5) A person's weight is N. What is the person's apparent weight when riding in an elevator which accelerates with m/s2 on its way down (see sheet 16,18') ? Indicate with a positive (negative) sign whether the result is the same (not the same) if the elevator accelerates with the same acceleration on its way up.
6) Two blocks are connected via a string that runs over a pulley (see sheet 19, replace the 30 degrees by 0 degrees). The kg block slides on a frictionless horizontal plane. The other block with a mass of kg is suspended from the string. What is the acceleration of the two blocks when they are released (see bottom of sheet 23) ? Indicate with a negative (positive) sign whether the two blocks have the same (different) acceleration.
