Which Organic Chemistry Lab Should I Take?

Choose CHE 327 if you want:

The lab that fulfills the minimum requirement for BIO, BCH, and pre-health students, while you pursue other interests.

CHE 327 is a one-semester course that may be taken in Fall or Spring. In recent years, there have also been Summer offerings. General Chemistry lecture and lab are prerequisites, and Organic Chemistry lecture is co-requisite. Thus, you may take CHE 327 concurrent with either semester of organic chem lecture or after you finish the entire lecture course. Well-prepared students are encouraged to take CHE 327 early on.

Because we cannot always accommodate all students in any given semester, plan so that you do not postpone CHE 327 until your final semester at Stony Brook.

Choose CHE 383-384 if you want:

  1. A CHE major or

  2. Not a CHE major but considering a career in a field - for example, BIO, BCH - for which  you will need lots of practical lab skills and/or

  3. Intrigued by the opportunity to work independently in a lab environment.

CHE 383-384 is a two-semester course. With this option, you take CHE 383 in the Fall (and CHE 384 in the Spring). There will be space for all students wishing to register for CHE 383 and having the prerequisites (a year of general chemistry lecture and lab) and corequisite (organic chemistry lecture). If the section you want is initially filled, attend lab the first day to sign up.
