I need to take CHE 321 (or CHE 322/326), but the recitation that I want to register for is closed.  What should I do?

There are a total of thirty recitations in between Mondays 12:50 pm and Tuesdays 6:40 pm. Half of the recitations (R01-R15) are associated with the morning lecture (L01) and the other half (R16-R30) are associated with the afternoon lecture (L02).  There are three parallel recitations in the same time slot.

The first thing you should do is to look if all the three recitations in the same time slot are full.  The other thing you can do is to switch to a recitation in the same time slot but associated with a different lecture.

If you have tried all the alternatives mentioned above and still can't find a recitation that fits your schedule,  then put yourself on the waitlist.  There will be plenty of activities on SOLAR between now and the beginning of the next semester, what's more, the students who received a grade of C- or lower in the pre-requisite courses will be de-registered, so there is a reasonable chance that the students on the waitlist will be enrolled.

Can I register in a recitation that is not associated with the lecture that I am registered in?

You can NOT officially register (on SOLAR) in a recitation that is not associated with the lecture that you are registered in.  We highly recommend that all the students go to the recitation that is not associated with the lecture that you are registered in.

If there is a special circumstance that you absolutely cannot attend any of the recitations associated with the lecture that you are registered in, it is possible for the course coordinator to arrange an informal switch within the class, provided there is space available.  To apply for such switches, please see the course coordinator and fill out the recitation switch request form (click here to download).

Please bear in mind that it is always mandatory to attend the lecture (the one that you are registered in) so that you will receive the credit for clicker quizzes.

What is the textbook?  Are there other course materials required?

The textbook for CHE 321, Fall 2009 is Organic Chemistry by T.W.G. Solomons and C. B. Fryhle, 9th edition.

In addition to the above textbook we will require molecular models.

The above items are sold as a package.  Before you try to purchase these items on the internet check the prices with the local vendors such the University Bookstore and Stony Books.

We will also be using these personal response devices commonly known as "clickers" for in class quizzes.

The Study Guide for the textbook will be available on Blackboard.

What if I miss a recitation?

If there is an acceptable excuse (medical condition or family emergency), you will be excused.  However, written documents regarding the absence, such as a doctor's note, are required.  You should submit the documents to the course coordinator.

What if I miss a midterm exam?

There is no make-up for the midterm exams.  The final exam will weigh more in such a case.

How do I get a regrade of an exam?

The grade is given based on what is written down on the paper.

You should always look at the posted answer key before considering a regrade request.  Although you may wish to discuss your question with an instructor before you request a regrade, it is not necessary to do so. If, having checked the answer key, you believe there is a grader's error that affected your grade, you should file a regrade before the regrade/late deadline (usually the next exam), and have your exam re-evaluated.

To file for a regrade, you must complete the Regrade form (can be obtained in the chemistry main office, Chemistry 104).  In addition, you need to email the class email account with subject "Exam (number) Regrade" and give your name and the four-digit class ID.  If your concerns are legitimate and clearly presented, they will be given every consideration.

Where can I get a blank copy of the workshop part 1 quiz?

Part 1 for each workshop is posted on course website (under "Workshops") after it is activated on Blackboard.

Where should I go for help if I have problems with MarvinSketch?

Having problem launching MarvinSketch?  Turn off popup blocking. Update your Java.  Then if still not working, call Instructional Computing Support (632-2778) if you are using a SINC computer, call Client Support (632-9800) if you are on your own computer.  Click here if you were not able to complete workshop part 1 due to a technical problem

Having problem using MarvinSketch to draw molecular structures?  Click here.  The TAs in the Chemistry Learning Center (located at the third floor of the Chemistry Building, east end) will help you with tips, too.

What if I have a question with my "clicker" points ?

Email the class email account: che321@notes.cc.sunysb.edu or che322@notes.cc.sunysb.edu or che326@notes.cc.sunysb.edu.

Most often the problem is a result of incomplete/incorrect information you entered on eInstruction when you registered your clicker.  Make sure you always update your account on time.

Having more than one clicker registered will mess up the record, too.  Be sure to deactivate the old clicker before you start using a new one.

I am a chemistry (or biochemistry) major and need to take CHE 326, but the course is full.  What should I do?

Try the waitlist first.  There will be plenty of activities on SOLAR between now and the beginning of the next semester, what's more, the students who received a grade of C- or lower in the pre-requisite courses will be de-registered, so there is a reasonable chance that the students on the waitlist will be enrolled.

In case you are still on the waitlist a week after the semester starts, it is time to start consider taking CHE 322 instead of CHE 326.  CHE 322 is usually less crowded that CHE 326 and can be accepted as a replacement of CHE 326 to satisfy your major requirement.

Why aren't the courses more challenging? And why aren't the courses easier?

These two questions are asked equally often.  We simply cannot please everybody.  The courses have been carefully designed to meet the need of the majority of the students.  We choose the materials that work for the student of average competency.

On the other hand, we really want to challenge any student who likes exciting science topics!  If you strongly feel that you want something more out of your organic chemistry class experience, talk to the instructor for suggestions on undergraduate research opportunities.  One recommendation is to take the elective Organic Chemistry Honors Seminars CHE 341-342.
